EBAC partners with Frick Middle School

11/11/2011

Sometimes kids have adult-size problems. When they do, the East Bay Agency for Children is ready to help.

EBAC, with almost 60 years of experience helping the children of Alameda County, is now managing the newly opened student health center at Frick Middle School in East Oakland. AMF Media Group coordinated public relations and media coverage for the October Grand Opening, ribbon-cutting and tour.

The center will provide youth development, mental health, medical and dental services free of charge to all Frick students. And it's all tailored to the cultural, linguistic and socio-economic needs of students and their families in the diverse community.

A prime goal will be to improve students' academic achievement by taking care of the mental and physical health needs that can make learning difficult.

The center gives the sixth-through-eighth graders a place to turn to for everything from basic first aid to serious counseling at what is often a vulnerable time of life.

Research carried out with the students, their parents and Frick Middle School staff found that 47% of students reported a need for mental health counseling. Yet almost 50% of the students encountered barriers to medical care – lack of transportation, no doctor or costliness of care. The student health center will meet those needs.

Also at Frick Middle School, EBAC's Circle of Care program will provide essential grief and bereavement counseling, a key tool in supporting a school community that is frequently exposed to violence and crime.

"The opening of the Frick Middle School Health Center will enable us to give the students and their families the help they need to flourish in a community that faces many challenges," said Steve Eckert, EBAC executive director.

Partnering with EBAC are the Native American Health Center, Alameda County Health Care Services, and Oakland Unified School District.

Oakland-based EBAC has provided mental health services at Frick Middle School for many years, but the multi-room mental health center is a major upgrade.

As EBAC approaches its 60th anniversary in 2012, the agency remains firmly committed to helping children and families reach their full potential.

AMF Media Group loves helping its clients make a difference…

During the first week of August, Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) sponsored and organized a World Breastfeeding Walk and Rally at the Frank Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland. World Breastfeeding Week promotes awareness of the importance of breast milk for infants as well as education for moms and children from disadvantaged communities.

Attended by over 100 men, women, babies and children, ACMC worked closely with community organizations to provide essential information and advice on breastfeeding. Free food from the Alameda County Food Bank, t-shirts and a "Tots Trot" race added to the family atmosphere.

AMF Media Group provided comprehensive PR support for the project, issuing public service announcements, media alerts and event information. On the day, AMF worked closely with the local media arranging interviews and pictures. As a result the event received good press coverage including the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Tribune, KPIX-TV and KSTS (Telemundo).

Deputy Mayor Desley Brooks joined the walk, citing the importance of breastfeeding for the future health of the US, babies not breast fed cost $2 billion dollars a year in preventable illnesses.

Michele Bunker-Alberts, the Lactation Coordinator for ACMC, was delighted with the enthusiastic response from local families. In the last 5 years ACMC's Highland Hospital has seen the rate of exclusively breast fed babies increase from just 25% to 70%. UNICEF is due to designate Highland as a baby friendly hospital later this year, making it one of only two hospitals in the Bay Area to receive such recognition.

Alameda County Medical Center launches new day in health care

06/16/2011

Alameda County Medical Center is committed to being a leader as an inte¬grated health care system for all residents of Alameda County. That means providing excellence in clinical quality and service, contemporary facilities and state-of-the-art medical technology.

This June the medical center celebrated a major milestone in its growing capacity to meet the health care needs of the community with the opening of a new state-of-the-art Catheterization Laboratory and Angiography Suite. Through angiography — a medical imaging technique that provides rapid diagnosis and possibly minimally invasive treat¬ment to cardiac patients — Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) will greatly enhance its treatment of heart disease, which is today the leading cause of death in Alameda County and the United States.

AMF Media Group supported ACMC in the opening by producing a grand opening event, a commemorative booklet and a video to celebrate the suite and to recognize those in the community who helped raise the $2.6 million needed for this critical technology.

The grand opening event was attended by more than 150 medical leaders, ACMC staff, community leaders and donors. Each attendee received a 16-page commemorative booklet that told the story of the fundraising campaign and capabilities of the new suite.

And the work at ACMC continues. Over the next six years, Alameda County residents will witness the physical transformation of the medical center's 14-acre campus as it continues to expand and evolve to deliver healthcare excellence to the community.

Congratulations to Alameda County Medical Center.
