Project Overview

Situation

Recognizing the need for increased community engagement and participation, the City of San Luis Obispo brought in AMF Media Group to provide communications support for external and internal audiences about city issues and services.

Approach

Serving as the city’s outsourced public information officer, AMF developed a first-of-its-kind Public Engagement and Noticing (PEN) Manual for city staff. The manual identified various engagement levels and appropriate outreach tools via a simple matrix. We also provided public relations through news releases and media outreach, website content, fact sheets and PowerPoint presentations.

Outcome

Community engagement spiked, including a significant increase in the use of Open City Hall by community members to partake in government forums. AMF’s efforts won a nod from the Public Relations Society of America for driving a 300% increase in public participation in the city’s goal setting and budget planning process.

Deliverables

Community Education

AMF produced a variety of informational resources on topics ranging from homelessness, transportation, housing, utilities and more. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we focused efforts on keeping the public informed and safe.
